Gui-Ling-Wu-Wei-Gan-Cao Soup

Cinnamon twig 3 qian, cloud fungus 4 qian, honey-fried licorice 2 qian, schisandra 1 qian.

This formula treats excessive water vapor in the kidneys, with yin fire surging upward, causing facial flushing, sore throat, and coughing. Gui-Ling suppresses the water and directs it downward, and water movement means qi movement. However, reverse qi cannot be suppressed without containment, so the sourness of schisandra is used to contain the qi. When the soil is thick, yin fire naturally subsides, so the sweetness of licorice is used to supplement it.

[Comment] This formula originates from “Shanghan Lun.” It primarily treats conditions caused by yin fire surging upward, resulting in facial flushing, sore throat, and coughing.
