Wuling San and Zhuling Tang 1977.8.9
Articles 71, 73, and 74 of the "Shanghan Lun" collectively describe the clinical manifestations of heat, thirst, restlessness, sweating, and urinary retention. Some scholars define the basic syndrome as "fever and thirst with difficulty in urination." Article 223 of the "Shanghan Lun" states: "For patients with fever and thirst accompanied by difficulty in urination, Zhuling Tang is the primary treatment," indicating that the indications for Zhuling Tang are identical to those for Wuling San. However, Article 224 of the "Shanghan Lun" specifies: "In Yangming disease, patients who sweat excessively and feel thirsty should not be treated with Zhuling Tang," implying that excessive sweating contraindicates the use of Zhuling Tang. In summary, Wuling San is indicated for fever, thirst, and difficulty in urination accompanied by sweating, whereas Zhuling Tang is indicated for fever, thirst, and difficulty in urination without sweating.
