Treatment of Gouty Arthritis 1977.8.22

Gout is a chronic condition caused by purine metabolism disorders, leading to an excess of uric acid. This excess uric acid typically accumulates in connective tissues, joints, and kidneys. The clinical symptoms usually begin with redness, heat, swelling, and pain in the second metatarsophalangeal joint, accompanied by functional impairment and varying degrees of limping. Occasionally, nodules appear on the earlobes and cause pain as well. Plasma uric acid levels consistently exceed 5 mg. Western medicine commonly treats this condition with colchicine, allopurinol, and probenecid, while TCM has relatively few documented treatments for gout. However, in recent years, some have attempted to diagnose and treat gout based on the concept of "lìjié fēng," using formulas such as Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang and Guizhi Shaoyao Zhi Mu Tang. Recently, someone tried the following formula and achieved remarkable results: Huangqi 30 g, Fangji 6 g, Fuling 15 g, Guizhi 12 g, Baizhu 10 g, Gancao 6 g, Qinpi 9 g, and Qinjiao 9 g.
