Experience in Treating Premature Ventricular Contractions, November 24, 1977

Comrade Yang Zhendong from the Taiyuan Research Institute in Shanxi treats frequent ventricular premature contractions using Trichosanthes kirilowii, Allium macrostemon, Pinellia ternata, Citrus aurantium, Salvia miltiorrhiza, sandalwood, Corydalis yanhusuo, Sophora flavescens, Alisma plantago-aquatica, Carthamus tinctorius, Acorus tatarinowii, and Albizia bark. Among these, only Salvia miltiorrhiza, Alisma plantago-aquatica, and Sophora flavescens are dosed at 15g, while the rest are between 6 and 9g. In one case, he used Codonopsis pilosula, Ophiopogon japonicus, Schisandra chinensis, Salvia miltiorrhiza, sandalwood, Corydalis yanhusuo, Citrus aurantium, Pinellia ternata, Angelica sinensis, Rehmannia glutinosa, Guizhi, and Polygonatum odoratum. Except for Ophiopogon japonicus at 30g and Rehmannia glutinosa at 24g, which are large doses, the rest are standard doses. Comrade Yang believes that patients with organic lesions should generally use Shengmai San, because it is a carefully designed cardiac tonic that protects myocardial function in clinical practice (confirmed by animal experiments). For premature beats, Corydalis yanhusuo is preferred, as it regulates the rhythm of the heart by acting on the blood. Sandalwood is particularly important, as it has been proven highly effective in treating arrhythmias caused by poisoning from Sini Tang and Wujiapi. Sophora flavescens also has a satisfactory regulatory effect on various arrhythmias, but it is bitter and cooling, and can easily harm the spleen and stomach if used alone, so it is usually added to decoctions. Comrade Yang also believes that in the treatment of coronary heart disease, the Beijing Regional Collaborative Group’s Coronary Heart II formula is also effective.
