Treatment of Thyroid Adenoma, December 19, 1977
Patients with this condition often have varying degrees of hyperthyroidism. Traditionally, TCM treats it with “Golden Lock” Hai Zao Yu Hu Wan as the first choice. This formula consists of the following herbs: seaweed, kelp, sea mustard, Pinellia ternata, Citrus reticulata pericarpium, Qingchenpi, Angelica sinensis, Ligusticum chuanxiong, Fritillaria cirrhosa, Forsythia suspensa, Saposhnikovia divaricata, Glycyrrhiza. Mnemonic: “Dangchuan Er San Du Lian Bei, Glycyrrhiza One Flavor Closely Follows.” In recent years, people have discovered the outstanding efficacy of Radix polygonati in treating thyroid adenoma, so they have centered their treatment around this herb, forming many effective compound formulas for treating thyroid enlargement in clinical practice. Zhejiang Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s Xiao Ying Tang: seaweed, kelp, Radix polygonati, soil-based Fritillaria cirrhosa, oysters; Shanghai’s late renowned TCM doctor Gu Bohua’s formula for treating goiter: Angelica sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, Bupleurum, Citrus reticulata pericarpium, seaweed, Prunella vulgaris, Pinellia ternata, Radix polygonati, Albizia bark, oysters, white mustard, Shi Jian Chuan. Note: ① Radix polygonati, besides treating thyroid adenoma, can also relieve cough and asthma, stop bleeding, 15–30g; ① Shi Jian Chuan, i.e., the whole plant of purple ginseng, has the effect of promoting blood circulation and relieving pain, often used for esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, etc., 10–15g.
