  1. When greatly tonifying the liver and spleen, it is necessary to add blood-circulating, stasis-clearing, and heat-clearing ingredients, such as White Snake Tongue Herb, Seven-Leaf One-Branch Flower, Pu Gong Ying, Purple Flower Ground Ivy, Fishy Smell Herb, and Cicada Slough.

  2. When greatly tonifying kidney yang, it is essential to also tonify kidney yin. When using Liu Wei Di Huang Tang, you can add Gui Fu, or even Zhi Bai.

  3. For proteinuria or mild renal impairment, use 3g of Xixin, 30g of Raspberry, 30g of Small Thistle, 15g of Eucommia, 15g of Walnut Meat, 15g of Psoralea, 15g of He Shou Wu, 15g of Cicada Slough, and 30g of Yi Mu Cao.

  4. To remove red blood cells from urine: Fresh Bamboo Root, Plantain, Large Thistle, Small Thistle, Crane Grass, Han San Qi, Black Dry Lotus, and Nu Zhen Zi; for cloudy urine, add 12–20g of Bixie; for reddish urine, add Zhi Mu and Huang Bai; for dry mouth, add raw gypsum, and you can also add Sheng Di Huang and Mai Dong.

  5. For those with severe lower back pain, use the following: Mulberry Bark, Mulberry Branch, Continued Break, Chai Hu, Gan Cao, Nu Zhen Zi, Tu Si Zi, and Goji Berries. Mulberry Mulberry River Chai Grass, Three Items Each 10g.

  6. Opening up lung qi often has a diuretic effect. The main prescription is Ma Huang Lian Qiao Red Bean Soup. Besides Ma Huang, you can sometimes add Sheng Yi Ren, Jing Jie, Fang Feng, and Purple Sage.
