Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Coronary Heart Disease – August 15, 2002

Currently, there are numerous medications available for treating coronary heart disease, including calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II inhibitors, nitroglycerin preparations, digitalis preparations, and diuretics, all of which can play a certain role. Traditional Chinese medicine has proven reliable efficacy against this disease, with formulas such as Gualou Xiebai Banxia Tang, Guan II, Han Sanqi, and Shui Zhi serving as basic emergency prescriptions. Typically, these formulas are supplemented with 20 g of raw hawthorn, 12 g of raw rehmannia, 10 g of angelica, 10 g of codonopsis, 15 g each of raw dragon bone and oyster shell, 6 g of stone calamus, 6 g of far-reaching intention, 20 g of chuan lian zi, and 10 g of longan meat. If arrhythmia occurs, Zhi Gan Cao Tang can be added, with emphasis on adding 30 g of salvia, 30 g of bitter sophora, 20 g of raw rehmannia, and 20 g of ophiopogon. Patients with weak gastrointestinal function should add musk and cardamom; those with shortness of breath should add schisandra. Some patients experience lower limb edema, indicating varying degrees of heart failure; Western medicine can prescribe digoxin, while traditional Chinese medicine can prescribe Ancient Sage II. Pay attention to chronic pulmonary congestion, which easily leads to infections; a certain amount of antibiotics can be given, and nighttime sleep is especially important, with sedatives administered before bed if necessary.
