Pharmacological Effects of Evodia, June 14, 1986
This herb is the dried, nearly mature fruit of Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth., a plant belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is classified as a warming and cold-dispersing traditional Chinese medicine, used for functional decline, metabolic slowdown, cold states, and nausea and vomiting caused by gastric smooth muscle spasms resulting from various chronic diseases. Professor Yamada of Japan conducted research on the pharmacology of this herb, and the results are as follows:
- Analgesic effect
Intravenous injection of a 10% ethanol extract of Evodia has an analgesic effect on rabbits, which is more pronounced under cold conditions.
- Promotes blood circulation
A transient increase in blood pressure and respiration occurs, and carotid artery blood flow increases.
- Raises body temperature
Evodiamine and evodiamine-like compounds have been isolated from this herb, both of which have a certain warming effect.
