Widely Used Cephalosporins, January 11, 1994
Cephalosporins have been renowned in the medical community for their broad-spectrum, potent, and rapid effects over the past decade. In the late 1980s, Pioneer I (cephalexin sodium), Cephalexin (Pioneer IV), and Cefathiamidine (Pioneer XVIII) were introduced. In the 1990s, second-generation products such as Pioneer VI (cefohexamine) and Pioneer V (cefazolin sodium) emerged. Although these are newer cephalosporin products, they can slightly impair liver and kidney function and may cause false-positive urine sugar results. The third-generation product, Pioneer II (cefoperazone sodium), overcomes these shortcomings and can be used even in patients with renal insufficiency without causing false urine sugar reactions. Other third-generation cephalosporins, such as cefotaxime, ceftezole, and ceftriaxone, have similar efficacy to Pioneer II.
