Agarwood is the trunk of an evergreen, large tree belonging to the Thymelaeaceae family. When it is split into firewood, this becomes the medicinal material. Due to resinous substances condensed within the wood, it is heavy and sinks in water; moreover, it emits a unique fragrance, hence the name "agarwood." Hainan Province in China produces abundant quantities of high-quality agarwood, while that from India, Iran, Thailand, and Vietnam is of inferior quality. This medicinal material has a pungent, bitter, and warm nature, with effects of descending qi, warming the middle jiao, and warming the kidneys. Its indications include distention and pain in the chest and abdomen, wheezing and reverse flow of qi, vomiting, and hiccups. For example: ① Agarwood 3 g, Perilla 10 g, Amomum kravanh 10 g, and persimmon calyx 4 pieces—this formula is specifically used to treat chronic cold-induced hiccups (Wu Qiu’s prescription); ② Agarwood 3 g, Aconite 6 g, and fresh ginger 6 g—this formula is specifically used to treat deficiency-cold asthma (Zhu’s Collection of Proven Prescriptions); ③ Agarwood 6 g, Radish seed 10 g, Aucklandia 3 g, and Citrus aurantium pericarp 10 g—this formula treats fullness and wheezing due to excess conditions (from the “Zhengzhi Zhunsheng” prescription); ④ Agarwood 3 g, Lindera 10 g, Areca nut 10 g, and Aucklandia 3 g—this formula treats abdominal distention, heart pain, and cold qi rushing upward (from “Yinshi Jiabao”).
Note: Perilla is a genuine herb that regulates qi, relieves distention in the middle jiao, descends reverse flow of qi, and stops vomiting. When combined with agarwood, its effect of descending reverse flow of qi is enhanced. Therefore, agarwood, Perilla, Amomum kravanh, and persimmon calyx constitute another excellent prescription for treating hiccups. The term "another" indicates that this formulation is superior to the Xuanfu Daizhe Decoction.
