My View on Aplastic Anemia March 24, 1997

The initial treatment for aplastic anemia relies on the basic formula of Dang Chuan Ji Dan Hong, followed by formulas such as Gui Pi, San Zi He Lian Da Gu Sang, San Dou Shen Sheng Chai Gu Yang, Liu Wei Di Huang Tang, and Zi Sheng Tang, all of which can be used. Treating aplastic anemia requires alternating between strengthening the spleen and tonifying the kidneys. The theory is that strengthening the spleen boosts peripheral blood, while tonifying the kidneys enhances bone marrow blood; tonifying the kidneys six times, strengthening the spleen returning to the spleen—these two approaches complement each other and enhance their effects. Tian Shui Qiao Dong initially used the aforementioned formulas and gradually recovered from the malady, but later, due to gastrointestinal issues, he took Gui Pi for half a year, causing his blood counts to plummet and relapse. I promptly administered kidney-tonifying medicines, and his condition began to improve. From this, it is clear that tonifying the kidneys is more effective than strengthening the spleen. As mentioned earlier, tonifying the kidneys focuses on the bone marrow, which is the essence of the kidney; strengthening the spleen focuses on the periphery, which is merely the manifestation. Therefore, treating aplastic anemia should prioritize tonifying the kidneys, with strengthening the spleen as a supplementary measure; reversing this order would put the patient in grave danger! Promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis are the foundations of treating this disease, and on this basis, one can either strengthen the spleen or tonify the kidneys as needed!
