Reconsideration of Lithospermum, September 19, 1997
Lithospermum is used for soft tissue tumors and thyroid cancer, both in combination with codonopsis, atractylodes, and astragalus. For the former, add bone-penetrating herb, tendon-stretching herb, and honeysuckle; for the latter, add Huang Jing, Chinese yam, summer dry grass, yellow medicinal herb, half branch lotus, and white snake tongue herb. Although the two formulas are largely similar, the main ingredient remains lithospermum, while codonopsis, atractylodes, and astragalus serve to reinforce and support the body. Lithospermum is the root of a perennial herbaceous plant, named for its purple color, traditionally used to clear heat, cool blood, detoxify, and promote rash eruption. According to “Miscellaneous Records of Famous Doctors,” it “clears the waterways”; according to “Compendium of Materia Medica,” it “benefits the large and small intestines”; and according to “Classic Materia Medica,” it “tonifies the middle jiao and benefits qi, promoting long-term vitality.” Combining these descriptions, this herb can be considered a trial drug for cancer treatment. Ancient people used 1–3 qian, while modern people can use up to 30 g.
