Huanglian Jiedu Tang is a formula from Wang Kentang’s “Waitai Mi Yao,” consisting of Huanglian, Huangqin, Huangbo, and Shan Zhi. Originally, this formula was used to treat boils, carbuncles, and other conditions caused by intense internal fire. In recent years, it has been used to treat hypertension, gastric ulcers, chronic gastritis, gastrointestinal bleeding, mania, insomnia, and schizophrenia. Japanese researcher Nishizawa Masao found that Huanglian Jiedu Tang can kill Helicobacter pylori and protect the gastric mucosa in gastric ulcers; Matsuo Haruo discovered that this formula can stop lower gastrointestinal bleeding, including rectal inflammation and ulcerative colitis bleeding. Additionally, this formula can regulate the autonomic nervous system and suppress sympathetic overactivity. Despite these benefits, because the medicine is bitter and cold and can harm the stomach, physicians throughout history often add Ganjiang and Banxia. When combined, this becomes Banxia Xiexin Tang, specifically used to treat gastric ulcer bleeding and chronic gastritis. I, however, combine this formula with Xiang Sha Liu Jun Tang, Da Dan Shen Yin, Sheng Longgu, Oyster, Sea Squirt, and Bai Shao to create a specialized prescription for treating stomach diseases, further enhancing its effectiveness.
