Magnesium and Digestive Diseases, October 12, 1999

Acute necrotizing enteritis, cirrhosis, ulcerative colitis, and other conditions can all lead to magnesium deficiency, which in turn can cause changes in digestive function. Low potassium, low calcium, and low magnesium situations can occur in various digestive diseases, with cirrhosis, diarrhea, vomiting, and gallbladder and pancreatic disorders being major causes of magnesium deficiency. Generally speaking, all digestive diseases exhibit symptoms of magnesium deficiency, the most prominent being fatigue, poor appetite, and lack of energy. Treatment for this condition can involve Panandine intravenous infusion, or magnesium sulfate—fast-acting intravenous infusion or slow-acting oral administration. However, oral magnesium sulfate has a poor taste, extremely bitter, and difficult to swallow. In recent years, foreign manufacturers have developed magnesium preparations with better taste, which can be widely used.
