Another Formula for Treating Leukemia—December 24, 1999

Yu Jin 6g, Chong Lou 10g, Dan Shen 30g, Huang Qi 30g, He Shou Wu 20g, Shan Dou Gen 20g, Shan Zha 10g, San Leng 10g, Ban Lan Gen 5g, Qin Jiao 10g, Shen Qu 10g, Ze Xie 10g, Dang Shen 10g, Chan Tui 10g, Sang Ren 10g, Sheng Yi Ren 20g, Tao Ren 10g, Huang Jing 10g, Bai Hua She She Cao 10g, Yin Chen 10g, Shan Zhi 10g, E Zhu 10g. Decoct in water and take one dose daily.

This formula was originally designed specifically for treating liver diseases and can be named Compound Strong Liver Decoction. In 1979, I used this formula to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia in Chief Engineer Qian of the Provincial Construction Bureau. His spleen shrank, his blood counts returned to normal, and his white blood cell count dropped from 200 × 10^9/L to below 10 × 10^9/L. Before retiring and returning to his hometown of Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, Chief Engineer Qian brought a generous gift to express his gratitude, saying, “Your medical skills are superb; the formula you prescribed is truly miraculous.” Over the past 20-plus years, I have adjusted and modified this formula to treat patients with high white blood cell counts in chronic myelogenous leukemia, and it has consistently proven effective. Recently, a patient named Jiang Lin with acute lymphocytic leukemia underwent three years of combined chemotherapy and traditional Chinese medicine treatment. As her survival time extended, the clinical effects of Western medicines gradually diminished. After switching to this formula, her blast cells decreased from 60% to 12%, and she reported that the traditional Chinese medicine was effective, requesting to discontinue all Western medications. This demonstrates that the formula is not only effective for chronic myelogenous leukemia but also for acute lymphocytic leukemia. Since the liver generates and nourishes blood, my late father always emphasized strengthening the spleen and kidney as the primary approach when treating leukemia. Compound Strong Liver Decoction, by soothing and activating the liver, opens up a new therapeutic avenue. Fifteen years ago, I published an article titled “Strengthening the Body and Consolidating the Foundation” in the Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, where I discussed how the modern meaning of strengthening the body and consolidating the foundation includes regulating the immune system, autonomic nervous system, metabolic system, and endocrine system. The significance of Compound Strong Liver Decoction lies precisely in its ability to regulate these systems.
