Case Study of Shen Zhuo Zhen Qi Tang December 17, 2000

In the winter of the Gengchen year, I treated a patient with emphysema who experienced chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and worsening symptoms during colds. Despite treatment by numerous physicians, there was no improvement, so the patient sought my help. Using Mai Wei Di Huang Tang combined with Dang Shen, Zhe Shi, Shan Yao, Shan Zhu Yu, Sheng Long Gu, Mu Li, Sheng Bai Shao, Su Zi, Qian Shi, and Gan Cao for six doses, the patient's shortness of breath significantly alleviated. In treating emphysema, I have previously used Du Qi, Mai Wei, and Sheng Mai, but with very limited clinical efficacy. This time, I boldly employed Zhang Xichun's Shen Zhuo Zhen Qi Tang, which proved effective, indicating that what Mr. Zhang referred to as "collapse of vital energy" is indeed emphysema. Mr. Zhang proposed the theory of "collapse of vital energy" and also invented the formula for "raising yang and lifting collapse." His formula for raising yang and lifting collapse includes Sheng Ma, Huang Qi, Chai Hu, Zhi Mu, and Ju Jing. This formula uses Huang Qi to tonify qi, Sheng Ma to lift qi, Chai Hu to regulate qi, Ju Jing to elevate qi, and Zhi Mu to nourish yin. When this formula is combined with Shen Zhuo, Du Qi, Mai Wei, and Sheng Mai, the therapeutic effect is greatly enhanced.
