Treatment Case of Esophageal Cancer, December 27, 2000

A man in Zhangye, over 50 years old, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer through gastroscopy, CT scan, and barium meal examination, confirming mid-esophageal cancer. Pathological biopsy revealed squamous cell carcinoma. Given the difficulty of surgery for mid-esophageal cancer and the poor postoperative prognosis, coupled with the patient's financial difficulties, he did not undergo surgery but traveled thousands of miles to seek my treatment. I prescribed Sheng Di Huang, Shan Yao, Shan Zhu Yu, Huang Qi, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Zhi Ru Xiang, Mo Yao, Chuan Shan Jia, Zao Jiao Ci, Chen Pi, Yuan Zhi, Chao Suan Zao Ren, Su Geng, Hou Pu, Ban Xia, and added half of the Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang to the formula.

After taking 20 doses of this herbal preparation, all symptoms began to improve. Subsequent barium swallow showed no obstruction or filling defects, and gastroscopy revealed no signs of cancer. This case utilized the traditional Liu Wei Di Huang Tang combined with Professor Zeng Junshan of Lanzhou Medical College's specialized formula for treating esophageal cancer (Huang Qi, Dan Shen, Bai Shao, Zhi Ru Xiang, Mo Yao, Chuan Shan Jia, Zao Jiao Ci, Chen Pi, Yuan Zhi, and Suan Zao Ren), along with an adjusted version of the Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang.
