Arnold-Chiari Malformation Combined with Syringomyelia, February 9, 2001

School-age children without systemic symptoms suddenly experience weakness in the right lower limb, a limping gait, drooping of the right foot with back arching, normal pain and tactile sensation, and no history of fever, infection, injection, or trauma, but with a history of intense physical activity. This condition is caused by herniation of the cerebellar tonsils, a congenital malformation of the posterior brain. Since MRI became available for clinical use, the diagnostic challenges of this condition have been resolved.
