18. P53 Gene and Cancer

Question: I’ve heard that cancer occurs when the P53 gene loses its function, leading to uncontrolled proliferation of mutated cells. Is this true?

Answer: P53 is a tumor suppressor gene, and there are hundreds of such genes in total. P53 is just one of them, and it’s not accurate to say that all cancers are caused by mutations in this gene.
