16. Bi Yu Zhuang Shu: Paroxysmal Tachycardia in Children

Q: A 7-year-old boy has occasionally experienced rapid heartbeat since June last year, which resolves on its own after a few tens of minutes. Once, the doctor heard a heart rate of 130 beats per minute during auscultation, but when an electrocardiogram was performed, it dropped to 90 beats per minute. The child feels somewhat uncomfortable during episodes of rapid heartbeat. What disease could this be, and how should it be examined and treated?

A: This is sinus tachycardia, caused by paroxysmal sympathetic excitement due to autonomic dysfunction in children. Western medicine can treat rapid heartbeat with propranolol, while traditional Chinese medicine, such as Gan Mai Da Zao Tang decocted in water, can prevent it.
