Question: Female, 50 years old. Bitter taste in mouth, pain in the ribs, chest, and back for more than two years. Two years ago, an examination revealed cholecystitis, which improved after taking anti-inflammatory and bile-promoting pills, but relapsed after a while. The bitter taste persisted, and later, bile-promoting drugs were ineffective. No further examinations have been done. After using your gallbladder-pancreas combined formula, other symptoms disappeared, but the bitter taste remains. The gums or the area under the tongue often swell and become painful. What additional herbs should be added or subtracted?

Answer: Besides cholecystitis, you probably also have pancreatitis. The gallbladder-pancreas formula is effective, but since pancreatitis is present, the treatment needs to be extended for a while until the pancreatitis symptoms completely disappear. Then come to my clinic for syndrome differentiation-based adjustments to treat the bitter taste and gum swelling.
