15. Hepatitis B Cirrhosis with Jaundice
Question: My father is 61 years old, with a history of hepatitis B infection and currently a virus carrier. He also has a history of hydatid disease, which was surgically removed five years ago. Recently, his jaundice has become severe, with bilirubin levels around 300. MRI ruled out bile duct obstruction, and the hospital initially diagnosed him with hepatic cirrhosis due to hepatitis, but the diagnosis remains uncertain. How should he be treated, and what good TCM treatments are available?
Answer: With hepatitis B and hydatid disease present, cirrhosis is more likely to develop, and most cases are cholestatic cirrhosis because albendazole, used to treat hydatid disease, can damage the liver itself. Treatment is quite complex and cannot be explained in a few words.
