11. Mei Li Sen Lin: 64-Year-Old Female with Bilateral Knee Osteophytes and Pain
Question: My mother is 64 years old and suffers from pain in both knees. The doctor says it’s osteophytes and recommends surgery, but they might grow back later, so she hasn’t had the operation. As she gets older, walking has become increasingly difficult. What good methods are there?
Answer: This is degenerative osteoarthritis, a condition that rural laborers are prone to. Essentially, it’s joint wear and tear that affects the surrounding soft tissues, mainly the bone spurs and synovial membrane. Surgery is not recommended; patients who undergo surgery tend to have poor prognoses. Using traditional Chinese medicine, physiotherapy, small-needle knife therapy, acupuncture, and massage can alleviate symptoms.
