8. Iron, Zinc, and Calcium Deficiency in Children and Anemia
Question: A one-year-and-six-month-old child has been found deficient in iron, zinc, and calcium, with anemia and poor digestion and absorption. Medication hasn’t helped. What should be done?
Answer: This is a typical case of pediatric malnutrition. The child needs to be hospitalized for treatment. Long-term diarrhea in children leads to disturbances in water and electrolyte balance, which in turn affects the absorption of trace elements. The priority is to treat the child’s malnutrition first, allowing them to return to normal absorption. Simply supplementing trace elements without addressing the underlying malnutrition is ineffective.
