2. Newcomer in the Old City, New Times
Q: I am the patient you mentioned earlier who may have both arthritis and high uric acid levels. How can someone as young as 21 develop degenerative arthritis? I was diagnosed with rheumatism at the age of three, and occasionally experienced knee pain, applying medicated patches. Recent tests show that my rheumatoid factor is also normal.
A: Young people are prone to rheumatoid arthritis. As the disease progresses, the rheumatism may improve, but the joint pain does not. This is because, on top of the original rheumatic condition, the synovial membrane of the joints is easily worn down. Large joints that bear heavy loads are particularly susceptible, hence the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. The fact that your rheumatoid factor and other indicators are all negative confirms this point.
