Q: My younger sister has hyperthyroidism, with test results showing levels dozens of times higher than normal. The hospital recommends radioactive iodine-131 therapy, but she is worried about its impact on future pregnancies. Is this treatment advisable?
A: It's better to start with medications such as propylthiouracil and methimazole, combined with traditional Chinese medicine for better efficacy. I don't recommend immediately opting for radioactive iodine-131 treatment. While it's absolutely indicated for thyroid cancer, it's not the first choice for hyperthyroidism due to its significant side effects.
