Preface
Time flies so quickly! Mr. Pei Zhengxue and his students have spent a whole year diligently compiling questions and answers from netizens into “Famous Chinese Expert in Both Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Pei Zhengxue’s Health Weibo, Volume 5,” which is about to be published. Once again, Mr. Pei has asked me to write the preface, and I am deeply moved by his rigorous academic attitude and tireless work ethic, so I gladly accepted the task.
I am delighted to find that compared with previous volumes in this Weibo series, this book has undergone significant changes in terms of audience size, geographic distribution of netizens, and the scope of questions answered. Mr. Pei’s Weibo followers have now reached 200,000, and the number of netizens asking questions has expanded from within the province and neighboring provinces to all parts of the country. This shows that Mr. Pei’s Weibo Q&A is having an increasingly large impact across China, and it also demonstrates that Gansu’s renowned veteran TCM doctors have established a solid foothold in the national public opinion arena. Moreover, the number of professionals in the field asking questions has increased markedly compared with last year, and the topics covered have expanded from common illnesses to the latest theoretical perspectives in medicine. Whether explaining clinical diseases and their treatments or discussing cutting-edge medical theories, Mr. Pei always manages to present complex ideas in a simple and accessible way, earning the admiration of those who ask and benefiting countless readers. Whether in Weibo Q&A sessions or in clinical practice, Mr. Pei consistently adheres to the principle of “Western diagnosis, TCM differentiation, herbal medicine as the mainstay, Western medicine as a supplement,” using an integrated approach of TCM and Western medicine to clarify medical uncertainties, relieve patients’ suffering, and serve human health. In doing so, he builds bridges of communication and trust between doctors and patients, as well as among medical professionals themselves.
Mr. Pei is a renowned expert in both traditional Chinese and Western medicine in China. He was born into a family of TCM practitioners and graduated from Xi’an Medical University in the early 1960s. Over the past fifty-plus years, he has used an integrated approach of TCM and Western medicine to diagnose diseases, incorporating Western diagnostic methods into TCM differential diagnosis. This not only enhances the accuracy of TCM diagnosis but also significantly improves clinical efficacy. What is truly admirable is that for decades, Mr. Pei has worked tirelessly, even in his late seventies, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to the cause of public health and quietly contributing his vast knowledge to the service of the people, thereby embodying the noble spirit of “great physicians are sincere and dedicated.” Such a clinical expert is truly rare, both in Gansu Province and throughout the country. Foreword
“Famous Chinese Expert in Both Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Pei Zhengxue’s Health Weibo, Volume 5” is about to be published and distributed. Since the first four volumes were released nationwide, their easy-to-understand content covering the most common health issues in daily life has attracted a large readership both domestically and internationally, exerting a broad and profound influence on ordinary citizens. We frequently receive letters from readers across the country praising the publication of this series and suggesting that this popular science Q&A format should continue to be compiled. From this we can further appreciate Director Liu Weizhong’s extraordinary vision: when he first took office as the head of the Gansu Provincial Health Department in 2008, he proposed that every influential expert in Gansu should establish their own Weibo account to build close doctor-patient and medical community relationships with netizens inside and outside the province, facilitating mutual exchange. It was precisely in response to this call that I began engaging in Weibo Q&A. Time has passed so quickly—eight years have already gone by. Looking back over these eight years, my continuous exchanges with netizens and readers have not only helped my academic ideas on TCM and integrated TCM-Western medicine flourish across the country, but have also motivated and challenged both myself and my team to keep reading, practicing, and answering questions, ultimately forming an academic team that combines theory with practice.
From December 2015 to December 2018—a total of three years—we continued to hold daily Weibo Q&A sessions from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., during which we accumulated more than 3,000 questions, totaling over 300,000 characters. After organizing and arranging these questions, we compiled them into “Famous Chinese Expert in Both Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Pei Zhengxue’s Health Weibo, Volume 5.”
The content of Volume 5 remains the same: we answer whatever questions netizens ask. I respond, while my graduate students type up the answers, taking turns so that everyone gets practice. I have spent over fifty years working in clinical settings, serving as the head of the internal medicine department and later as the head of the TCM and integrated TCM-Western medicine departments. In my younger years, I even worked for several years in the surgical department of a small county-level hospital.
As a physician working in such a setting, of course I inevitably encounter gynecological and pediatric patients. Therefore, I can say that I am a general practitioner. Precisely because of this, I am able to answer all kinds of questions, including some posed by scholars in the medical community, and provide fairly satisfactory responses. There are some specific figures that I cannot recall offhand, so my students look them up and fill in the gaps. Now it seems that although this book falls under the category of popular science literature, it also offers certain explanations of contemporary medical theories. Thus, it will be helpful not only to the general public but also to grassroots medical workers.
My academic successors, Liu Shiru and Cao Jingyu, have also put in tremendous effort to compile the entire manuscript, and I would like to express my gratitude to them here. I would also like to thank President Xia Xiaojun of the Gansu Provincial Cancer Hospital, who conducted a thorough review of this book before publication, striving to minimize any errors. The structure of this book adopts a question-and-answer format, with the table of contents extracted directly from the questions in the main text and simplified to make it easier for readers to quickly find what they need. Please understand that there may be some differences between the simplified table of contents and the actual titles in the text. I hope this book will bring benefits to a wide readership.
