The spleen is an important peripheral immune organ and the largest lymphoid organ in the human body. It serves as the habitat for various immune cells and the site where immune responses to blood-borne antigens are initiated. Pathogens entering the bloodstream can trigger immune responses within the spleen, causing changes in its size and internal structure. During humoral immune responses, lymphoid follicles increase in number and size, and plasma cells in the splenic cords proliferate; during cellular immune responses, the perivascular lymphatic sheaths become markedly thickened. Therefore, microscopic examination of splenic pathological sections can provide valuable insights into the body's immune function.
