4. Ophiopogon Decoction (from “Medical Forest Collection”)

Indications: Pulmonary consumption (upper consumption).

Take two qian each of Ophiopogon japonicus (core removed), Coptis, and Dried Winter Melon, boil two cups of water down to eight-tenths, drink warm. If no Dried Winter Melon is available, use one fresh winter melon weighing three jin, peel it, remove the flesh, cut it into twelve slices, take one slice each time, boil in water, three times a day.

Also: Besides the aforementioned “Golden Cabinet Summary” and “Medical Forest Collection” formulas, there are other versions of Ophiopogon Decoction: ① Ophiopogon paired with Cortex Lycii, used to treat bone-steaming lung invasion. ② Winter Ophiopogon paired with Ma Mei, used to treat diabetes, unbearable dry throat, incessant drinking, and urgent abdominal bloating. ③ Ophiopogon paired with Platycodon grandiflorus and Licorice, used to treat pulmonary abscess with pus and phlegm, spitting out pus like porridge (all three formulas appear in “Comprehensive Record of Sacred Remedies”).
