Baihu Tang
One liang of gypsum, five qian of zhi mu, two qian of licorice, and a pinch of glutinous rice.
These four herbs are cool and sweet, nourishing the stomach yin and clearing stomach fire. When the Yangming meridian is dry and hot, this formula works like a golden wind blowing in the evening, completely dispelling the summer heat. Hence the name “Autumn Golden Tiger Soup,” which is the standard formula for treating Yangming-related conditions in Zhang Zhongjing’s Shanghan Lun. When used to treat blood-related illnesses, especially those with a rapid pulse, fever, and thirst, it is particularly effective.
[Note] (1) Jinbiao: In ancient times, seasonal changes were explained using the Five Elements theory, with autumn belonging to the Metal element, hence the term “autumn wind” referring to the golden wind. Biao means strong wind or storm. Jinbiao refers to the strong winds of autumn.
[Note] The formula comes from "Shanghan Lun." Anyone with a rapid pulse, fever, or thirst can use it.
