Jia-Yi Earth-Transforming Soup
White peony root 5 qian, licorice 3 qian.
Yang Xishan’s major method for treating blood loss centers around this formula, which he highly praises. In fact, peony root enters the liver, while angelica, chuanxiong, and peach kernel help remove old blood to generate new blood. Black ginger and honey-fried licorice guide these three herbs into the lungs and liver, promoting blood production and qi circulation, making it a sacred remedy for postpartum recovery. Many texts replace honey-fried licorice with motherwort, but motherwort actually cools blood and promotes diuresis, lacking the ability to generate blood—contrary to the name of the formula. I believe it could be used for red dysentery or hematuria, but definitely not for this formula.
[Comment] Based on the formula’s composition, in addition to the aforementioned two herbs, it may also include all the ingredients of Shenghua Tang. The author emphasizes that this formula is a sacred remedy for blood stasis, and honey-fried licorice cannot be replaced with motherwort, because motherwort cools blood and promotes diuresis, without the ability to generate blood—contradicting the formula’s name.
