Xuanfu Daizhe Shi Decoction
Ginseng 3 qian, Licorice 2 qian, Pinellia 3 qian, Fresh Ginger 3 qian, Jujube 5 pieces, Calcined Hematite 3 qian, Xuanfu Flower 3 qian (stir-fried)
This formula is well-known for treating hiccups and retching (1), but people often overlook the fact that there are several types of hiccups, and some are not related to stomach issues. For instance, fire-related hiccups should be treated with Chengqi Tang; cold-related hiccups with Lizhong Tang plus cloves and persimmon calyx; and hiccups caused by blood stasis with Dachaihu Tang plus peach kernels and Moutan bark. This formula, however, is specifically for treating hiccups caused by phlegm-dampness, which is different from other types of hiccups. Therefore, one should not automatically use this formula whenever hiccups occur. The formula uses ginseng, licorice, and jujubes to tonify the middle burner, while fresh ginger and Xuanfu are used to eliminate phlegm-dampness, and Pinellia and hematite are employed to suppress rebellious qi. When the middle burner's qi is strong, phlegm-dampness will naturally dissipate; when phlegm-dampness clears, qi flows smoothly, and hiccups cease. In treating illness, it is crucial to address the root cause, and this formula is effective because it does not deceive ancient practitioners. If accompanied by excess fire, add Mai Dong and Ku Qin; if accompanied by cold, add cloves and persimmon calyx; and if there is excessive phlegm, add Fu Ling. Only after identifying the true nature of the condition can adjustments be made.
[Note] (1) Hiccups and retching: refers to vomiting and hiccups.
[Note] This formula originates from "Shanghan Lun." It has the effects of tonifying qi, harmonizing the stomach, suppressing rebellion, and transforming phlegm. It can treat hiccups caused by stomach deficiency and phlegm-dampness.
