The lung’s qi originates in the stomach, so Gan Cao and Ren Shen are used to tonify the stomach and generate fluids to benefit the lungs. When lung qi is strong, it can rise upward, reach the exterior and deliver qi inward, and descend without becoming stagnant. Therefore, any formula for treating the lungs generally centers on Ren Shen, but it can only replenish fluids and vital energy—it cannot resolve qi stagnation. When wind-cold encloses the body, qi becomes trapped inside and cannot rise to the exterior, so Zi Su, Qian Hu, Ge Gen, and Sheng Jiang are used to disperse it. When phlegm and fluid accumulate internally, qi reverses upward and cannot descend inward, so Xia, Ling, Ju, Zhi, and Chen Pi are used to drain and settle it. Altogether, this formula is a balanced remedy for dispersing wind-cold and draining phlegm and fluid. It is also used for coughing up blood, nosebleeds, asthma, and cases of blood stasis and qi stagnation from injuries, leveraging its dispersing and draining effects to eliminate stagnation and prevent blood from being blocked.

[Note] This formula comes from "Yi Jian Fang." It is a balanced remedy for dispersing wind and eliminating phlegm. By treating blood-related conditions, it also has the effect of promoting blood circulation and stopping bleeding.
