It treats conditions like concurrent heat and diarrhea with bloody stools. Using Huang Qin and Huang Lian to clear heat, and Ge Gen to disperse, ensures that the descending evil still reaches the upper level, so it doesn’t press down on the lower level when it exits the body. This is similar to Yu Jia Yan’s experience in treating dysentery—the method of turning the tide and rowing upstream. Zhang Zhongjing’s formula truly embodies this idea. Being able to change in this way means that more than half of the problems in treating dysentery have been solved.

[Note] This formula comes from “Shang Han Lun.” It is the main prescription for treating body heat and diarrhea.
