Old Master Pu Fu Zhou’s Experience in Treating Hypertension July 12, 1977
Master Pu’s experience in treating hypertension is among the finest of his lifelong medical career. A review of Master Pu’s case records shows that he treated three cases of hypertension. In two of these cases, he used Fu Pian, indicating that Master Pu was adept at using Fu Pian in treating hypertension. Hypertensive patients have excessive yang, and Fu Pian is a yang-tonifying herb. Generally speaking, when yang-excess patients use yang-tonifying herbs, it’s like trying to put out a fire with fuel—counterproductive. However, Master Pu effectively treated hypertension by using Zhen Wu Tang combined with Dang Shen, Du Zhong, Gou Ji, and Sang Ji Sheng. A review of hypertension also reveals differences between cold and heat, and between deficiency and excess. For those with excess, use San Huang Xie Xin Tang; for those with deficiency, there are distinctions between yin deficiency and yang deficiency. The former uses Qi Ju Di Huang Tang, while the latter uses Zhen Wu Tang. For those with heat, use Long Dan Xie Gan Tang and Zhen Gan Xi Feng Tang; for those with cold, use Fu Zi Tang and Zhen Wu Tang. Overall, hypertensive patients with overactive sympathetic nerves are considered excess and fire-related; those with overactive parasympathetic nerves are considered deficiency and cold-related.
