Clinical Applications of Guizhi Fuling Wan 1977.8.15

This formula is the primary prescription in "Jinkui Yaolue" for treating pelvic adhesions and incomplete deliveries. In recent years, its application has gradually expanded to include chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic appendicitis, varicocele, hydrocele, epididymal tuberculosis, and ectopic pregnancy, all of which can be treated with this decoction. During the summer of the Ding-Si year, Director Wang Yifang of the Lanzhou Comprehensive Motor Factory Hospital casually mentioned to me that a patient had a facial mass—a residual lump left after a dental abscess ruptured—and that after treatment with Guizhi Fuling Wan adjusted as needed, the patient recovered in just three doses. Another case involved a residual scar from a dog bite on the thigh, which also healed quickly with this formula. Given these observations, the scope of application for this decoction can be extended from the original lower abdominal area to any part of the body where there are scar-like masses, provided they exhibit similar characteristics. In short, this formula is effective for chronic inflammatory masses—do not overlook this potential. "Jinkui Yaolue·Treatment of Pregnancy-related Diseases in Women" states: "If a woman has a pre-existing mass and her menstruation has stopped for less than three months, yet she continues to experience abnormal vaginal bleeding, this is likely due to the mass interfering with the flow of menstrual blood. If fetal movement is felt above the navel, it indicates that the mass is firmly attached and causing harm. If fetal movement is felt at six months of pregnancy, it suggests that the previous three months of menstruation were normal and the fetus is viable. If bleeding occurs after three months of cessation, it indicates that the mass has not been removed, and the mass should be addressed. Guizhi Fuling Wan is the primary treatment for such cases." This passage describes how pelvic masses in women lead to menstrual irregularities, making this formula the main indication for the remedy. What exactly is the nature of these pelvic masses? Are they adnexitis, ovarian cysts, or uterine fibroids? Today, the indications for this formula have expanded to cover all gynecological conditions, including chronic appendicitis, varicocele, epididymal tuberculosis, and ectopic pregnancy, all of which can be treated with adjustments to the formula. Director Wang Yifang's examples of facial masses, residual symptoms from dental abscesses, and scars from dog bites on the thigh all demonstrate the formula's effectiveness.
