This formula is a famous prescription from “Jingui Yaolue”: “Abdominal distension, dry mouth and tongue—this indicates fluid retention in the intestines; Ji Jiao Li Huang Wan is indicated.” According to this passage, the formula is specifically for abdominal distension caused by gastrointestinal issues. However, in recent years, its therapeutic scope has been expanding. ① Adding Peucedanum praeruptorum, Corydalis yanhusuo, winter melon seeds, apricot kernels, sour jujube seeds, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Fritillaria cirrhosa, mother-of-pearl, Rehmannia glutinosa, Albizia bark can effectively treat cold-induced asthma accompanied by chest tightness, cyanosis of the lips, and a slippery, rapid pulse. ② Adding Salvia miltiorrhiza, Fritillaria cirrhosa, Xuanfu flower, loofah fiber, Jinlingzi San, and Perilla seeds can treat chest tightness, shortness of breath, and difficulty in expectorating phlegm—symptoms of chest obstruction. ③ Adding Wuling San, Mu Tong, and Coptis chinensis can treat urinary retention with facial edema and lumbar distension. ④ Adding Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan and Wuling San can treat blood stasis.
