Xiong’s Migraine Formula, November 26, 1977

Migraine, known in Western medicine as headache, is an episodic disease characterized by sudden onset and severe attacks, which can occur on either side of the head. Western medicine attributes these attacks to cerebral vasospasm, and intramuscular injection of ergotamine can provide temporary relief. Xiong’s migraine formula originates from “Collection of Famous Doctors’ Case Records Nationwide,” where Xiong Dingcheng treated migraines. The original formula consists of Tianma 9g, Angelica dahurica 12g, Ligusticum chuanxiong 6g, Agkistrodon acutus 15g, earthworm 15g, Rheum palmatum 9g, and Glauber’s salt 9g. Modifications: add Siwu Tang for blood deficiency, Longgu and Oyster Shell, Hook Vine, and White Tribulus for rising Liver Yang, Peach Kernel and Carthamus tinctorius for blood stasis, Major Rheum and Glauber’s salt for constipation, and prolonged pain leading to increased earthworm and Agkistrodon acutus.
