Experience in Treating Liver Pain, December 25, 1977
Chaihu Shugan San is the main formula for treating liver pain, but when patients have signs of heat or yin deficiency, the effect of this formula is often limited. Recently, when treating hepatitis B patients’ liver pain, I combined this formula with a family-preserved recipe from the Yang household, adding Jinlingzi San and Dan Shen Yin, and achieved remarkable results. This shows that this formula can be paired with cooling herbs to enhance efficacy. The specific composition is as follows: Bupleurum 15g, Citrus aurantium 12g, Paeonia lactiflora 15g, Curcuma wenyujin 6g, Glycyrrhiza 6g, Ligusticum chuanxiong 6g, Cyperus rotundus 6g, Longdan 12g, Artemisia capillaris 12g, Gardenia jasminoides 9g, Angelica sinensis 12g, Buddha’s hand 6g, Huang Jing 6g, Oysters 12g, Carthamus tinctorius 3g, Corydalis yanhusuo 6g, Melia azedarach 6g, Aucklandia lappa 6g, Shengma 9g, Sandalwood 3g,焦术 6g, Honeysuckle 15g, Citrus reticulata pericarpium 6g. Looking at Huang Wendong’s medical records for treating epigastric distension, the formulas always include Angelica sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, Corydalis yanhusuo, Curcuma wenyujin, Qingchenpi, Bupleurum, Citrus aurantium, and other similar herbs. This shows that pain related to qi must be paired with medicine related to blood to be effective, and medicine related to blood often uses Angelica sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, Corydalis yanhusuo, Curcuma wenyujin, while medicine related to qi often uses Qingchenpi, Bupleurum, Citrus aurantium, and other similar herbs. In addition, White Tribulus is slightly warm and gentle, affecting the Liver Meridian, and is very effective for pain caused by liver qi stagnation, so it can be widely used by patients with liver pain.
