Experience of Xu Songnian from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Treating Proteinuria – May 18, 1978
- Emphasize clearing and draining, eliminating pathogenic factors to reinforce Zheng Qi: white snake tongue herb, seven-leaf one-flower, cicada slough, motherwort, large thistle, stone fern, black ginseng, fang ji, raspberry.
- Pay attention to regulating the functions of the lung, spleen, and kidney: ① The lung is the source of water, as mentioned in the "Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine" regarding "opening the ghost gate and cleansing the palace," as well as the so-called plateau water-conducting method—all fall under this category. Mr. Xu is skilled at using Ma Huang Lian Qiao Chi Xiao Dou Powder, where ma huang is not only suitable for patients with low blood pressure but also for those with high blood pressure; additionally, su ye and jing jie can also be used as adjuncts. Formula: su ye, jing jie, tong li zi, ma huang, fang feng, lian qiao, da fu pi, chuan pu, chi xiao dou, fresh lu gen, tea tree root, fu zi. ② "The kidney is the gateway of the stomach," according to the "Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine," and Zhang Jingyue said, "Water fears soil, and its regulation lies in the spleen." Mr. Xu is adept at using Shi Pi Yin to treat water-related issues, which aligns with this idea. Shi Pi Yin originates from the "Ji Sheng Fang," with ingredients including wood fragrance, papaya, white atractylodes, poria, licorice, da fu pi, thick pao, grass fruit, dried ginger, and fu pian. Mr. Xu believes that the combination of betel nut, thick pao, wood fragrance, and grass fruit in the formula is particularly appropriate. ③ When treating proteinuria, Mr. Xu not only emphasizes tonifying kidney yang but also kidney yin, stating that yin and yang are a pair of interdependent yet opposing entities. While tonifying yin and yang, one can also consider appropriately using some astringent herbs, such as schisandra, golden cherry, white fruit, black plum, red stone powder, raspberry, bone-setting herb, calcined dragon bone, and calcined oyster shell. Mnemonic: five metals, white plum, red basin, stone powder.
