Statistics on the Causes of Heart Failure as of April 14, 2001
In 1980, rheumatic heart disease and valvular diseases accounted for 47% of cases; by 1990, this figure had dropped to 24%, and by 2000 it was only 8.9%. In 1989, coronary heart disease accounted for 29.1% of cases; by 1990, this rose to 38.8%, and by 2000 it reached 50%. The average age of onset of heart failure has increased year by year: 51.1 years in 1980, 58.9 years in 1990, and 68.8 years in 2000. In summary, the shift in the causes of heart failure from rheumatic heart disease to coronary heart disease reflects the improvement in living standards, with coronary heart disease becoming increasingly common while rheumatic heart disease gradually declines. At the same time, better medical conditions have led to an increase in the age of onset.
