Vertigo Caused by Vertebral-Basilar Arterial Atherosclerosis as of April 18, 2001
Ms. Chen, a 56-year-old female from Lanzhou University, suffered from refractory vertigo. She had previously been diagnosed at major hospitals in Beijing and Shanghai with vertebral-basilar arterial atherosclerosis and infarction. The patient experienced paroxysmal vertigo that did not alleviate even with eyes closed and worsened with head movement, accompanied by mild nausea and vomiting. I prescribed a combination of Xuefu Zhuyu Tang, Guan II, Han Sanqi, Shui Zhi, Hou Gou Zhu Shi Cao, Ban Gou Che Xia Shi, and Wu Shan Zao Gui Yuan, along with other herbs as appropriate. After seven doses, no improvement was observed; however, after more than twenty doses, her condition began to improve, demonstrating that the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine lies in gradual progression. It also shows that promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis can indeed improve cerebral blood flow and effectively treat vertigo caused by cerebral infarction.
