Purple Ginseng Tablets for Treating Epilepsy as of June 20, 2001

Ten grams of Rhizoma gastrodiae, ten grams of gallnuts, five grams of Euphorbia kansui, six grams of Euphorbia pekinensis, three grams of realgar, three grams of cinnabar, one gram of musk, thirty grams of Sophora flavescens—all ground into powder and made into tablets, 0.3 g per tablet. Take three tablets three times daily, and the efficacy rate for treating epilepsy reaches 75%. This formulation is based on the Purple Gold Pill combined with Sophora flavescens. The Purple Gold Pill originates from the "Ningyu Xinshu" and is a commonly used emergency remedy in traditional Chinese medicine, applicable both internally and externally. It primarily treats boils and abscesses, accompanied by foul-smelling phlegm, a greasy tongue, and a slippery, rapid pulse. It can also be used for acute poisoning, toxic dysentery, acute gastric spasms, and other purulent diseases, including suppurative infections, sepsis, boils, carbuncles, and cellulitis—these are all indications for this formula. The Euphorbia kansui and Euphorbia pekinensis in the formula are warm in nature and slightly toxic, helping to remove blood stasis and reduce swelling, while also promoting bowel movements and expelling water; used together with gallnuts, they prevent overly aggressive purgation. Realgar, Rhizoma gastrodiae, and musk all have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects; cinnabar calms the mind and provides sedation. This formula treats purulent infections and has been proven effective through centuries of use, demonstrating the practical value of traditional Chinese medicine's bowel-clearing therapy. The three ingredients—realgar, Rhizoma gastrodiae, and musk—not only have anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects, but also soften hard masses, detoxify, or open up and drain, all of which greatly aid in resolving boils, abscesses, and carbuncles. Adding Sophora flavescens to this formula dramatically enhances its heat-clearing and detoxifying properties, clearly strengthening the original effects of the Purple Gold Pill. However, naming this formula "Purple Ginseng Tablets" with epilepsy as its primary indication shows that the realgar, musk, Rhizoma gastrodiae, and gallnuts in the Purple Gold Pill also have the effect of relieving excitement in brain tissue and producing a strong sedative effect. As the saying goes: "Five mountains follow big sulfur, purple, cinnabar, and sophora all have fragrance."
