X-ray Characteristics of Bone and Joint Diseases, June 15, 2003
Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis exhibit the following features: ① Narrowing of the joint space; ② Decalcification of the bone ends; ③ Increased cortical calcification of the articular surfaces; ④ Bone hyperplasia. Ankylosing spondylitis, on the other hand, shows ossification of the spinal ligaments, causing the vertebral bodies to take on a square shape. Calcification of the ligaments on the spinous processes results in the appearance of spinous process margins on anteroposterior radiographs.
