Cholestatic Jaundice in Infants Aged 2–8 Weeks, December 27, 2004

This type of jaundice is characterized by elevated conjugated bilirubin and occurs between 2 and 8 weeks of age, indicating dysfunction of the liver and biliary tract. Jaundice occurring within the first week is neonatal jaundice, characterized by unconjugated bilirubin; this type is physiological jaundice and milk-related jaundice. Cholestatic jaundice occurs in approximately 1 out of 2,500 cases, with the most common causes being bile duct atresia and neonatal hepatitis. Neonatal hepatitis refers to a diffuse cytomegalic transformation observed histologically, a nonspecific change not caused by HV but related to infection and metabolism.
