The pathogenesis of allergic purpura is believed to be blood stasis flowing abnormally outside the vessels, with prolonged stasis turning into heat, heat forming toxins, and wind-fire mutually reinforcing each other. The most commonly used prescription for treating allergic purpura is: honeysuckle, forsythia, dandelion, houttuynia, tu fu ling, white papyrus, white bark, rehmannia, windproof, bi xie, red peony, danpi, licorice, and cicada slough. All are decocted and taken orally. A mnemonic verse goes: “Three flavors of disinfection (earth) white ground wind, bi xie red dan grass cicada call.” This formula contains rehmannia, red peony, and danpi; it also includes honeysuckle, forsythia, dandelion, and houttuynia—so-called “grass” refers to crane grass and purple herb.
