Gexia Zhuyu Tang for Ulcerative Colitis, October 9, 1978
Reports on using Gexia Zhuyu Tang to treat ulcerative colitis were briefly mentioned in a certain magazine, but since it was quite some time ago, I can no longer recall the exact issue! Inspired by that report, I applied this formula to a patient named Guo who suffered from colitis. The patient had left-sided abdominal pain, occasional mucus stools, with the pain mainly localized in the left lower abdomen and radiating upward to the left side and around the navel. After more than six months of various treatments with little effect, in September 1978 I treated him with Gexia Zhuyu Tang. After taking 15 doses, the symptoms markedly improved, and the pain almost completely disappeared. While administering this formula, considering the severe pain in the lower abdomen, I added 6g each of Xiao Hui Xiang, Gan Jiang, and Rou Gui. After taking 10 doses, although the pain subsided, the patient occasionally experienced dry mouth and sore throat; once these three herbs were discontinued, the aforementioned symptoms also eased!
