Case study of treating azotemia on May 8, 1979
Mr. Chen Zheng from Qin’an, a 43-year-old man, sought treatment from me in February 1970. He had chronic long-term edema accompanied by lower back pain, and Western medicine diagnosed him with chronic nephritis. The edema had persisted for over ten years, becoming increasingly severe in recent years, with extreme fatigue. Tests revealed non-protein nitrogen (NPN) levels of 62 units. The patient experienced dizziness, tinnitus, lower back pain, leg weakness, generalized edema, sensitivity to cold, and a weak pulse.
Diagnosis: Chronic nephritis, azotemic syndrome.
Prescription: Rehmannia glutinosa 10g, Cornus officinalis 6g, Chinese yam 10g, Moutan cortex 6g, Poria cocos 10g, Alisma orientalis 10g, Cinnamomum cassia 3g, Fuzi 6g, Plantago psyllium 10g, Achyranthes bidentata 10g, Astragalus membranaceus 15g, Polygonatum odoratum 10g, Atractylodes lancea 6g, rhubarb 10g, white bamboo root 30g.
After self-administering over 200 doses, NPN levels returned to normal, and the edema subsided.
In March 1984, the patient traveled specially to Lanzhou to thank me, saying that since taking my prescription, his illness had completely healed, and he had enjoyed good health and smooth work for over ten years. He then presented the original prescription, framed as a piece of cardboard, saying he would keep it as a souvenir.
