Clinical Application Experience of Cinnamon 1980.12.12
In the winter of 1979, I treated a patient at the Railway Bureau. The patient had nephritis for more than three years, with persistent proteinuria above (+++), feeling cold and afraid of cold, lower back pain and leg fatigue, and facial edema. I gave him Jisheng Shenqi Wan combined with su geng, cicada slough, motherwort, and white grass root, and after five doses, the proteinuria decreased from (+++) to (+). Upon checking, it turned out that the cinnamon in this formula was mistakenly written as 15g, which actually made the formula special. Besides warming the middle and dispelling cold, strengthening yang and tonifying kidney, cinnamon can also be used for long-term illness with weak constitution, low qi and blood, pale complexion, widespread swelling that does not heal or long-lasting ulcers that do not close. This shows that cinnamon has a special role in healing chronic inflammation. Why does cinnamon have this special effect? According to modern pharmacology, cinnamon has the effect of dilating blood vessels, based on its ability to relieve smooth muscle spasms. Therefore, cinnamon’s protein-reducing effect is completely understandable. It is estimated that this medicine improves blood circulation in the glomerular vessels, which is the fundamental reason for reducing proteinuria in chronic nephritis.
I propose the following formula for reducing protein in nephritis: polygonatum 15g, cinnamon 15g, astragalus 20g, su geng 10g, cicada slough 6g, motherwort 30g, white atractylodes 10g, codonopsis 15g, licorice 6g, white grass root 30g, raw rehmannia 12g, angelica 10g, white peony 15g, scrophularia 10g, chuanxiong 6g, sanling 10g, ou shu 6g, forsythia 15g, fritillaria 6g. Decoct in water and take one dose daily.
