High Fever and Kampo Medicine, June 3, 1986
In Kampo medicine, the formulas for treating high fever are as follows: ① Mahuang Tang syndrome: headache, fever with chills, floating pulse. ② Gegen Qinlian Tang syndrome: fever with thirst, body heat, diarrhea. ③ Baihu Tang syndrome: extreme heat, extreme thirst, large pulse, profuse sweating. ④ Chengqi Tang syndrome: fever, yellow tongue coating, constipation. ⑤ Zhenwu Tang syndrome: fever, dry mouth, full and rapid pulse, loss of appetite, spontaneous urination, constipation, slight perspiration. (Lao Sen Shen, “Japanese Journal of Oriental Medicine,” October 9, 1984)
Among the above five groups of fever syndromes, the remaining ones are generally well-known; only the fifth group presents an important therapeutic discovery. The diuretic effect of Zhenwu Tang has long been recognized, but its antipyretic effect is relatively unknown—Lao Sen Shen’s discussion truly reveals profound insight.
